Why I teach...I teach because I love to learn. Teaching is humbling, inspiring continuous evolution, transformation, mental growth, personal balance, and deep introspection. Through teaching, my creativity is ignited and my perspectives are challenged and expanded. Teaching is inspiration, a reminder of what fundamentally connects humanity with the planet. Students are the mirrors which reflect our deepest inner-selves. In their presence, I am reminded to be mindful, to smile and laugh, to listen, to be patient and kind, to be consistent, to change, adapt, evolve, and to let go. "Teaching is [inherently] political in the sense that power and privilege – through decisions about funding, curriculum, class size, testing, tracking, and other matters of policy and practice – exacerbate rather than ease social class and race inequalities" (Sonia Nieto). It is in these realms that I can and do choose to make a difference.
Why I have taught and traveled internationally...It is my experience that the most important aspects of human existence are communication, empathy, and connection. Each of these aspects resonate throughout one's sense of place, one's ancestry, and one's intersections of identity. They also occur cross-culturally. As parents, we strive to stretch and challenge our daughter's world view through multicultural experiences. Internationally, the ability to see the importance of these aspects becomes possible. As a family, we have grown tremendously through travel. As a teacher, the life lessons that I have learned from my students have completely shifted how I approach education. I am eternally grateful to bring these lessons into my classroom today.
